Cloud or On-Premise? A Practical Guide for Ugandan Businesses

Cloud isn't automatically the right answer in a market where connectivity and power can be unpredictable. Here's how we help clients decide between cloud, on-premise, and hybrid setups.

Most advice about moving to the cloud is written for businesses with fast, reliable internet and stable power. That isn't the reality for every business in Uganda, and pretending otherwise leads to expensive mistakes. The right answer depends far more on how your business actually operates than on what's currently fashionable.

Start with what breaks when the internet goes down

This is the single most useful question we ask. If your team cannot invoice, take payments, or serve customers without a connection, then a fully cloud-hosted system introduces a dependency you may not be able to absorb. We've built offline-first systems for exactly this reason - a school management platform that keeps working through outages and syncs when the connection returns, for example.

On the other hand, if your workload is bursty - seasonal traffic, month-end reporting, occasional heavy processing - the cloud's ability to scale up and back down again is genuinely hard to replicate on your own hardware.

Count the real cost, not just the monthly bill

On-premise looks cheaper on a spreadsheet because the hardware is a one-time purchase. But that number rarely includes replacement cycles, backup power, cooling, physical security, or the staff time spent maintaining it. Cloud shifts that into a predictable operating cost, which is easier to budget for but easy to over-provision if nobody is watching.

Hybrid is usually the honest answer

In practice, most of our clients end up somewhere in the middle. Customer-facing systems and backups live in the cloud, where uptime and reach matter most. Systems that must keep running regardless of connectivity stay local, syncing upward when they can. The goal isn't architectural purity - it's making sure the business keeps operating on a bad day.

Questions worth answering before you commit

Which processes absolutely cannot stop, even during an outage?
How much does one hour of downtime actually cost you?
Who will maintain this in two years, and do they have the skills?
Are there regulatory or client requirements about where data is stored?
What's your realistic growth curve over the next 24 months?

If you can answer those five clearly, the infrastructure decision usually makes itself. If you can't, that's the conversation worth having before anyone starts migrating anything.
